A neighboring jurisdiction responds to a violent domestic call.  As units are arriving on scene the male subject jumps in a van and rams them and then flees the area.  They start chasing after this violent fleeing felon as he gets on the highway.  We get the information that he is heading towards us and start heading to cut him off.  I’m following behind one of my partners who is on the phone with units from the other jurisdiction since we don’t have their radio

channel.  Well, the subject pulls off the highway and down an embankment and bails out of his van.  He bails out along side of a canal so he jumps into the canal and hides under a dock.  We pull up alongside the canal a little ways down to attempt to locate him.  As we are standing there a fishing boat comes passing by us.  We yell for the driver of the boat and he stops.  The canal is maybe 100 feet wide and it is surrounded by trees and houses so he could be anywhere.  We tell the driver of the boat that we need his help and he very willingly offers without hesitation.  He pulls up along shore and we commandeer his boat.  He turns around and starts taking us back towards where the subject entered the canal.  As we are getting closer there are officers lined along the side of the canal.  Well, we see the subject treading water in the middle of the canal.  My partner makes every attempt to talk the subject out of the water but he doesn’t seem like he is going to go willingly.  He then grabs a long flexible PVC pipe and starts pushing the subject towards the shoreline where the other officers are located.  So the subject says, alright, alright, I’ll come up there on the boat.  Well he grabs the other end of the PVC pipe and tried to pull my partner in the water.  Unfortunately for him my partner wasn’t budging.  Instead he pulled the upper part of his body out of the water and in a split second one of the officers along the shore say what was happening and fired his taser causing the subject to let go of the pipe and drop back into the water.  After that I think that he figured he wasn’t going to get very far with the canal routine and he swam to the shore.  Although once on land he decided that he would take his luck at resisting arrest.  It didn’t get him very far.
