As my shift begins, I can already tell that it is going to be one of those days! The radio seems like it just won’t stop! I handle a few calls and then go to get some gas. Just as I am pulling out of the gas station I heard that dreaded sound, “beeeeeep, so and so unit clear and copy an armed robbery.” Units start responding from all over to attempt to locate the suspects. As we are in route we get updates with a suspect vehicle description and a possible
tag number. As we get into the area we immediately start looking for the suspect vehicle and checking all points of entry and exit into the area. Five to ten minutes pass and no one has found anything. I start thinking to myself, “this vehicle is long gone.” I then want to stick my foot in my mouth. As I decide to check one last location I see a vehicle heading towards me matching the description of the vehicle occupied by three black males, just as the victim had stated. As the vehicle passes by me I glance back and see that the tag number has four out of the six characters that the victim had given and one of the wrong characters was actually an S and the victim gave a 5. What are the chances!?!? I quickly turn around and pull behind the vehicle. I give out my location over the radio and stand by for backup units to respond. I continue behind the vehicle and continue to give updates of my location. Then the vehicle starts to get on the highway. The first thought going through my mind is, once this car gets on the highway, what are the chances that they are going to stop? Seconds later two additional units pull up behind me and we initiate a felony stop. To my surprise the vehicle actually stops. My backup starts giving commands over his P.A. system and has the driver exit the vehicle. Once the driver reaches us I take him into custody and get setup for the next occupant. The front seat passenger is ordered out of the vehicle next and slowly makes his way towards us. He too is quickly taken into custody. As the three occupant is ordered out of the backseat driver’s side of the vehicle he steps out and what do we see, an ankle bracelet from his house arrest. How sad is that? Inside the vehicle we locate multiple wallets and cell phones belonging to Hispanic individuals and our suspects were in no way Hispanic! Contact was made with the additional cell phone and wallet owners who advised they too had just been robbed. In the end all three went to jail for multiple counts of armed robbery! |
