It was nearing the end of shift and everything had started to quite down. I was sitting back thinking the rest of the night was going to be a breeze. As I am sitting there a message comes across the computer for a blue minivan occupied by three black males with assault rifles. I think to myself, "what are the chances that they are going to pass through my area." Roughly ten minutes or so passes by when I hear one of my zone partners come across
the radio saying, "a blue minivan just passed us with three black male occupants all wearing masks!" I immediately start flying lights and sirens to get to them, blowing through street lights and weaving in and out of traffic. As I get closer my adrenaline is pumping. I come peeling around the corner and come to a screeching stop behind some other patrol cars. I immediately reach for my patrol rifle and quickly head to set up for a felony stop. One of the guys starts by ordering the driver over his P.A. system to turn the car off and drop the keys out the driver's side window. Things are going smoothly as the driver complies with our commands. He continues to order him to slowly reach his hands out the window and open the door. Everything is going textbook thus far. The driver is ordered out of the car and told to turn away from us. Moments later, black male, with an extremely pale looking face, exits the driver's door and says, in a flamboyant voice, "what's going on here." This doesn't phase us since that is a pretty common expression, however, we do start to wonder why his face is so pale. He is ordered to slowly walk backwards and he is quickly taken into custody, still asking why he is being stopped. Next the passenger is ordered to step out of the vehicle, but to our surprise we are greeted with the same look. Now we are starting to look at one another saying, "I don't think these are our robbers." We slowly begin to let our guard down and approach the vehicle only to find two more individuals with their faces painted white dressed in all black. We ask if there is anything in the vehicle that we should be aware of and we are advised, "well, this is my bag of makeup and this is my purse." It turns out, our would be robbers were nothing more than a church mime group just trying to make it home! |
